A burglar resistant safe is the last barrier between the burglar and your valuables and its primary function is to win time. The safes are specially designed to protect the contents from external attack and they can be classified by the degree of resistance they offer. The grade depends on various factors, like the thickness and sort of metal, the number of locks and delaying factors which have been included in the walls.

Cash and valuables ratings

When testing burglar-resistant safes, experts with all the relevant knowledge, tools and skills make one or more openings in the safe. The result is then converted into a score (in resistance units - RU) taking into account the factors of time and the tools used. The higher the score, the higher the resistance is. The safe is classified into a resistance class based on this test result. Insurers attribute a cash value amount to each resistance class, as an indication of the implications for insurance cover. We advise you to always contact your insurance company if you want to store specific high-value valuables or large amounts of cash in a safe.

Standards and cover

Good burglar resistant safes and cabinets have been tested in accordance with certified European standards. The safe is attacked by experts in the tests who have the relevant skills and tools as set out in the standard.

EN 1143-1 (Grade 0 t/m Grade V)

'Grade' is also sometimes called 'Class' or 'CEN'. The levels are indicated by zero or a Roman numeral (0 to V)

EN 1143-2 (Grade 0 t/m Grade V)

Standard for deposit safes. The entire deposit safe (including the deposit facility) is tested for burglar resistance.

• EN 14450 (S1 en S2)

Burglar resistant safes to this standard are particularly suitable for daily deposits and domestic use.

Anchoring

Free-standing burglar resistant safes with a weight of less than 1,000 kg must be anchored to a wall or floor to comply with the European standard. Only then are your valuables really protected from theft. Solid anchoring is also required by the insurance.
